A Worthy Heart Spotlight and Author Interview

Interview with Sara Beth Williams

Hello and welcome!!! Can you start by describing your writing process?

I always start with an idea for a character. I find that I’m sometimes stuck on the one character for a long time (which is hard because I write romance and typically you need two MCs!).

After I have a character in mind, and I’ve done some backstory brainstorming, and if I’ve been able to come up with a second MC, then I begin free-writing story scenes – sometimes in order, and sometimes out of order. For my first 3 book series, I wrote out of order consistently, then had to go back and fill in gaps. But while working on a few new projects since I’ve finished up the 3 book series, I’ve tried to write in a more chronological order.

Sometimes, the story ideas/scenes come to me really fast, and I can kind of write a paragraph style outline, then begin the writing process. Sometimes I do the outline later. I just started utilizing a program called Plotrr as well, which is kind of a visual layout program where you can write out scenes, and move them around. So it’s like how I already outlined, except I can move pieces around a lot more easily which is always nice.

An outline helps me fill in gaps that are missing, where too much time passes, or there isn’t any real transition. It also helps me clarify the end goal of the story and the characters. Then, I begin another draft, and begin to write the scenes that need to be written in order to fill in the plot holes. Or I change scene order around. Then I repeat this exact process 2 to 3 times, or more, depending on the manuscript. For about a year, I’ve been part of a fantastic critique group and they’ve been so helpful in providing feedback on my ‘final’ drafts. Once I get feedback from them, I clean up my manuscript yet again, and then it’s ready to be queried or whatever I decide to do with it from there.

See, this is why I am a reader and not a writer lol. I wouldn’t be able to go through all this!

When you are not writing, what do you like to do?

I love hanging out with my husband and kids, reading, and playing guitar when I can.

Oh awesome, I didn’t know you played guitar!

What’s your go-to bible verse during times of difficulty?

I have been fixated on this verse. Hebrews 6:19. I usually read the NLT, but I love the way it’s written in the NIV as well.

“We have this hope as an anchor for the soul, firm and secure. It enters the inner sanctuary behind the curtain.” Hebrews 6:19 NIV

Throughout this ridiculous past year, this verse has reminded me where I find my hope and my strength and peace. It has reminded me where I can set my sights, and who my Rock is.

So true. I love the song “What a friend we have in Jesus.” Remind me of this verse.

What are you working on next?

The third book in my contemporary Christian romance series releases in March 2021! It should be up for pre-order (at the time this interview posts) You can follow me anywhere on Social media to find out more. You can visit me on Bookbub and on Amazon to find out the latest.

Yay! I can’t wait to read it!

What do you want your readers to get from reading this story?

When reading this story, I hope readers understand the depth of God’s love for them, and that they are worthy of God’s love, no matter their past circumstances. I want readers to see how much God’s love differs from our human understanding of love, and how much we need that kind of love. I also want readers to understand that there is hope in romance for anyone with a rough past, and that there is hope in Jesus Christ’s love for us.

I love this. Thank you for writing a story that points to Christ. We need it so much!!! And thank you for stopping by today. I enjoyed chatting with you.
