My Perspective

This was such a sweet and charming story, full of romance, fun moments, animals, a mystery, and even some difficult topics. But Slattery gives a story filled with hope, love, and second chances. From the moment Stephanie started interacting with Caden, I knew I was hooked. They had such easy chemistry, and though they both had some difficult back stories to grow from, Slattery brought together in such a tender, loving way.

With the background that Stephanie has, I did expect there to be more apprehension when she was first around Caden. But I appreciated the way Slattery took her time with these characters, and gave them space to sort through their feelings and their fears. And even when something big happens at the vet office, and it looks like our cute couple may be headed for trouble, I feel like (Caden especially) reacted in a natural way given the circumstances.

In addition, Slattery provides a beautiful faith thread, and honestly I enjoyed this part of the book very much. I love the ministry that Stephanie’s hosts have. I can see that being a true ministry, and hope there are ones like that across the country. It was really a touching part of the story.

I think Love Inspired fans will enjoy this new story, the characters, the charming town, and even the animals. I know this is a story I could read again on a realizing afternoon! I received a complimentary copy of this book. I was not required to write a favorable review. All thoughts and opinions are my own.

Stephanie Thornton, the heroine in my latest release, Her Small Town Refuge, may be my strongest and most courageous female character yet. She overcame a great deal to get where she’s at. Fleeing an abusive husband, going to vet tech school as a single mom, and then traveling halfway across the country for an internship she hopes will lead to full time employment. And all while balancing the mama-guilt that seems to plague all mothers since the dawn of time.

This was not the life Stephanie envisioned when she first married John, her high school sweet heart. She’d expected the Hallmark movie marriage filled with home renovation projects, weekends spent snuggling under a blanket to binge watch their favorite movies, and the melodious sound of giggling children—she’d hoped for three at least.

But then John joined the military. Once he returned, everything changed. The possessiveness she’d found endearing, even assuring, in high school intensified and as did his temper. He became a monster and her life a nightmare. When a bar fight resulted in his arrest, Stephanie saw her chance for freedom, for her and her baby growing inside her. She gathered what she could and fled.

And determined to never land in that place of fear and vulnerability again. And now, after years of working toward her vet tech degree while caring for her precious little girl, she’s found herself in the small town of Sage Creek Texas interning for a man, a veterinarian, who could easily break through all her defenses—if she let him.

Which she has no intention of doing. No matter how handsome and gentle he might appear.
