A WWII novel of courage and conviction, based on the true experience of the men who fought fires as conscientious objectors and the women who fought prejudice to serve in the Women's Army Corps.

Since the attack on Pearl Harbor, Gordon Hooper and his buddy Jack Armitage have stuck to their values as conscientious objectors. Much to their families' and country's chagrin, they volunteer as smokejumpers rather than enlisting, parachuting into and extinguishing raging wildfires in Oregon. But the number of winter blazes they're called to seems suspiciously high, and when an accident leaves Jack badly injured, Gordon realizes the facts don't add up.

A member of the Women's Army Corps, Dorie Armitage has long been ashamed of her brother's pacifism, but she's shocked by news of his accident. Determined to find out why he was harmed, she arrives at the national forest under the guise of conducting an army report . . . and finds herself forced to work with Gordon. He believes it's wrong to lie; she's willing to do whatever it takes for justice to be done. As they search for clues, Gordon and Dorie must wrestle with their convictions about war and peace and decide what to do with the troubling secrets they discover.

My Perspective

The Lines Between Us may only be Green’s second novel, but her writing matches those of authors who have been writing for decades. Her words are purposeful, beautiful, smooth, and perfectly laid out across the pages of this book. The combination of dialogue, internal thought, letters, and POV’s is masterfully put together. And the history! I learned so much from this book, which led me to looking into even more when I was done. Amy Lynn Green takes these little unknown facts from history and turns them into amazing stories. She’s careful to keep true to the era and the facts, while sprinkling in her own imagination.

Perhaps what touched my heart more than anything about this story was the message behind it. Green reminds readers that you can have two people with opposite viewpoints that come together and really listen to the other side. Maybe not at first, but the more Gordon and Dorie are together, learn about each other, learn about the reasons behind their viewpoint, the more they start to understand the other side. And isn’t that what we should be doing in ALL aspects of our lives? Listening to the other side, not just shutting them down? Oh my word this message really spoke to me, and rang loud and clear for me. If there is one message (besides the gospel) that this world needs today, it is this.

Green will take your breath away with The Lines Between Us. The history, mystery, strong characters, and descriptive writings will draw you in without a chance to leave. Make sure you set some time aside to read it, you’re going to need it! I highly recommend this novel for historical fiction fans, especially those looking for the little pieces of history that are unknown. I received a complimentary copy of this book. I was not required to write a favorable review. All thoughts and opinions are my own.

About the Author

Amy Lynn Green is a lifelong lover of books, history, and library cards. She worked in publishing for six years before writing her first historical fiction novel, based on the WWII home front of Minnesota, the state where she lives, works, and survives long winters. Because of her day job in publicity, she has taught classes on marketing at writer’s conferences and regularly encourages established and aspiring authors in their publication journeys. In her novels (and her daily life), she loves exploring the intersection of faith and fiction and searches for answers to present-day questions by looking to the past.

If she had lived in the 1940s, you would have found her writing long letters to friends and family, daydreaming about creating an original radio drama, and drinking copious amounts of non-rationed tea. (Actually, these things are fairly accurate for her modern life as well.)
