My Perspective
There are so many reasons I adore this story. It pulled at my heart strings (yes I cried more than once). It had such a sweet romance. It had ASL – something that is really important to me. It had powerful character growth. It had familial tension. And it had a surprise twist at the end that I did not see coming! I knew I was going to be reading greatness, Nicole Deese wrote the words. But this one really blew my socks off.
Let’s start with the ASL and deaf community representation. It was so well done. I loved seeing Gabby’s voice memos. They were raw, personal, and just showed her character in a way I didn’t expect. For a teenager, her faith was way beyond her years. It was just convicting if I’m being honest, and in a good way. But what I liked most about this was how Deese showed the importance of accepting someone how they are. Not trying to constantly “fix” them. It was a hard lesson for a certain character to learn, and I actually think I learned it myself right along with them.
Then there’s the romance. August and Sophie were just so sweet, so perfect. And by perfect I mean totally flawed, making mistakes, but just everything I wanted them to be. The bookish aspect of what they were doing was even better! I mean can we just hire them to do the audiobook for this book!? Maybe?? But seriously guys, they were great characters. The thing I appreciated was that Sophie wasn’t afraid to tell August some hard truths. How many characters do that early in their relationship? Not many because authors don’t always want to rock the boat. But Deese wrote it so well that I was hanging on every conversation, every word.
Then we have Sophie. Never being enough for her parents, and not having a good relationship with her brother. The black sheep of the family if you will. I loved seeing her work through all the emotions, finding a voice, and just becoming the woman God made her to be. It spoke right to me heart.
You don’t really expect a plot twist in a contemporary romance novel, am I right!? But Deese gives us one anyways and I absolutely loved it!! I can’t really say much about it, so please read it for yourself and then message me your thoughts – because I’ve got some thoughts!
All in all this was another fantastic book from Deese. She writes beautifully, and contemporary romance fans will fall in love with Sophie and August’s story. I think they’ll fall in love with Gabby too. I know I sure did.
I received a complimentary copy of this book. I was not required to write a favorable review. All thoughts and opinions are my own.
