EXCERPT
Take the girl and go.
The thought came out of nowhere and hit him like a warm gust of wind. The voice reminded Peter of the intuition that had saved his life on countless occasions. A voice he couldn’t hear, but heard all the same.
“Did you find Old Will?” Billy asked.
Peter found it hard to concentrate on what the bartender was saying. The voice deeply disturbed him. He usually only heard it in the midst of battle. And he always did what it said. He attributed still being on this earth to obeying that voice.
Clara had her back to Peter, so he took the opportunity to see what Belle was doing. Over on the stairs, she was reading to the men again, but she looked up as if she knew he stared at her. Did she recognize him without his beard and buckskins? From across the room, their gazes collided, and he heard the voice again.
Take the wife I have given you and leave this place.
