The Mosaic Collection – Interview with Janice Dick!

Posted by abakersp in Spotlights / 3 Comments

Welcome to the Blog Blitz for The Mosaic Collection, hosted by JustRead Publicity Tours! Everyday, for the next several days, I’ll be interviewing each author in the collection. So be sure to come back and see what they have to say!!

For His glory…
The Mosaic Collection is an international community of women authors who use faith-based fiction to touch hearts with the good news that Christ’s finished work on the cross has made us one family, and to nurture affection for the people God has placed within our circles of influence, so that the grace and glory of God may become visible and personal to everyone we meet.

…and our good
We are sisters, a beautiful mosaic united by the love of God through the blood of Christ. We have experienced the redemptive, restorative power of God’s grace in our marriages and families, and we believe our God is able to heal, restore and redeem our brokenness. His love fills us with the courage to persevere, and to offer others a Christ-like compassion that is full of His wisdom and grace.

Janice L. Dick was born and raised in southern Alberta, Canada, into an ethnic Mennonite farm family. She has always loved stories of family heritage and the emigration of her people from Russia. Her aim is not only to share the faith journeys of her forebears, but also to showcase God’s sovereignty in the midst of that milieu. Besides historical fiction, Janice writes contemporary novels and short stories, blogs, articles and book reviews. Janice is the winner of the 2016 Janette Oke Award.

Cornerstone message from the collection:

I believe that God is faithful through all things, even when it doesn’t look that way. He does what he does, and is not accountable to anyone, but his love and mercy hold us up.

Hello Janice and welcome to the blog today! Let’s get right into the questions. What’s in your current TBR pile?

River of Redemption by Ann H. Gabhart

Through the Valley by Florica Nitescu

The Snake, the Crocodile and the Dog by Elizabeth Peters

Jammed by Deany Ray

Death in a Stately Home by Sara Rosett

Oh I enjoy Ann H. Gabhart books!! Can you tell us about any research trips you took while working on this book?

So far I’ve written mostly historicals set in Russia or China, so my research has been via internet, books and personal interviews. I haven’t yet figured out time travel!

When you figure it out, could you please let me know!? I would love to time travel!

Tell us about your writing routine.

An ideal writing day means taking time in the morning to go through my emails and Facebook posts and to do any business that is required. Afternoons would then be for writing or editing. The actual is more like: a half hour of gardening that turns into two hours, a phone call from one of my daughters which lasts too long, an opportunity to ride along with my husband on a trip into town for some farm thing. My family comes first, so sometimes the balance is out, but since our kids are grown, it’s easier than it would have been earlier on.

Sounds like my days – one task turns into a two hour event lol. But I agree, family comes first!

Favorite dessert?

Something with dark chocolate, maybe cheesecake. A chocolate fountain draws me like a fly to sweet tea.

This is where we are going to disagree. I am a milk chocolate girl. But I do love cheesecake!

If you weren’t an author right now, what would you be doing?

Reading.

That is the prefect answer! And what I always want to be doing 🙂

Favorite bible verse?

Psalm 16:5-6 “Lord, you alone are my portion and my cup; you make my lot secure. The boundary lines have fallen for me in pleasant places; surely I have a delightful inheritance.”

So many amazing verses can be found in the Psalms!

What’s one thing readers don’t know about you?

I live on a farm several miles from a tiny hamlet, half an hour from a small town, 45 minutes from a small city. And I love it out here, except when we don’t get decent internet service!

Ha! I know all about that. I don’t even get good cell reception at my house.

You’re on a stranded island and you can only have one book with you. What would you pick and why?

Well, the Bible is the only book I can read over and over, and always get something new from it. I guess that’s because it’s the “living” word of God.

Amen! I feel the same way.

Do your characters ever talk to you at odd times?

Only when I’m writing. The first time surprised me, when the character wouldn’t leave the story, and stuck around for three books instead of the brief space I had planned for him. Another time I stuck pictures near my computer of two elderly sisters who owned a fictional hotel, and they seemed to converse with each other.

Characters seem to have a mind of their own, don’t they!?

What’s the weirdest thing you’ve written notes on for a story idea?

How much digitalis would it take to almost kill an old woman, and could one obtain or prepare it from foxglove plants?

I wonder if anyone ever tracks the things authors look up…..

Can you tell us what are you working on next?

I’m currently working on the publication and marketing aspect of my sixth historical novel, completing the second series. From there, I plan to revisit a contemporary cozy to prepare it for publication.

Can’t wait to hear more about them! Thank you so much for chatting with me today Janice!
