About the Book

When Lucy Weber is forced to leave the orphan train and is offered up to any man who’d have her in Saddle, Texas, she doesn’t know what to do. The last thing she wants is a husband, especially not leering Clem Toeger.

Garrett Black didn’t mean to find himself a wife. He was perfectly satisfied running his ranch on his own. But when a frightened girl is offered up to anyone who wanted her, he can’t abide the thought of her being hitched to Clem Toeger, a man with questionable integrity and the only candidate.

Will this unlikely couple have a chance at love?

My Review

I thought this was a lovely story about hope, love, faith, and trusting God for the results. You never know how an author’s first book is going to come out, but I thought Brandi did a wonderful job! While I don’t know much about orphan trains, I felt she wrote in a realistic fashion that made me want to learn more about them. In fact, I was kind of sad when Lucy’s time on the train was over because I really wanted to get more of a feel of what life was like on this train. Although you see glimpses throughout the story, I didn’t feel it was enough of a background to understand where Lucy was coming from. I’d love to see another story about the orphan train!

I enjoyed the way Brandi wove God into the storyline. The characters were not afraid to pray, talk about God, or share His Word with others. The scene where Lucy is talking to Joan about Salvation really spoke to me and I’m so happy it was a part of this story. What an awesome way to share salvation with others! It resonated in my heart and filled me with hope that someone may read this and come to know the Lord.

My favorite character in this book was Garrett. He was so gentle, kind and loving. The way Brandi penned him really did make me think of a white knight coming to save a damsel in distress. The way he was patient with Lucy showed his true nature. I felt their relationship happened at just the right pace. It was not rushed, forced, or left me rolling my eyes. Instead it had me a little tearful at times.

I look forward to more in the future from Ms. Gabriel. Can’t wait to see what is next!
