How can a meek wallflower help a returning war hero whose dreams are plunged into darkness?

Mary Bloomfield has no illusions. Her chances for matrimony have long since passed her by. Still, her circumstances are pleasant enough, especially now that she has found purpose in assisting her father with his medical practice in England's beautiful Lake District. Even without love, it's a peaceful life.

That is until Adam Edgerton returns to the sleepy district. This decorated war hero did not arrive home to acclaim and rest, but to a new battle against the repercussions of an insidious disease. Mary's caring nature cannot stand to see someone suffer--but how can she help this man see any brightness in his future when he's plunged into melancholic darkness, his dreams laid waste by his condition?

Adam wants no charity, but he's also no coward. If this gentle woman can work hard, how can he do less? Together they struggle to find a way forward for him. Frustration and antipathy slowly develop into friendship and esteem. Then a summer storm atop a mountain peak leads to scandal--and both Mary and Adam must search the depths of their closed hearts for answers if they hope to find any future path with happiness at its end.

Best-selling author Carolyn Miller is back with a fresh series that will not only thrill readers eager for more of her work, but bring in new fans looking for beautiful writing, fascinating research, deftly woven love stories, and real faith lived out in the Regency period.

My Perspective

Carolyn Miller has managed to pack so much into this story, I’m not sure where to begin. The faith thread is beautifully written into the pages of this novel. The message is clear – we need to trust in the Lord for our futures, and not fret when unexpected things come our way. Adam and Mary certainly had things come their way that they were not expecting, and while they may have struggled at times, it showed they were just humans. Flawed individuals that sometimes felt sorrow, pity, self pity even, and the unknown was somewhat scary.

But amidst this, Miller reminds readers that no matter a person’s circumstances, they are still lovable. Now, I don’t want to go in detail about Adam’s issues, because I don’t want to spoil it. BUT let me say this – Adam has an issue that many would find discouraging, and he does. But I think a part of him also lets this issue define him, and that is a lesson we can all learn. Our disabilities don’t define us. Frankly anyone who looks at us and decides our worth based on this disability it certainly not worth our time. The way Miller brings Adam and Mary together is perfect. Two individuals with bruised hearts, closed hearts, that slowly start to open up and perhaps even ponder love again. Oh it was just a pleasure to read.

As if romance, friendship, faith, and important lesson isn’t enough, Miller continues to amaze me with her attention to detail about her historic setting. I could easily visualize the scenes as I was reading thanks to her descriptive writing. I felt like I was in the time period with the language she used. I just had to close my eyes a moment and it all came together. You know we always want our favorite books to end up on the big screen, but I think sometimes that might actually be a negative thing. The way I’ve pictured Adam and Mary’s journey here is wonderful, and I wouldn’t want anything to distort that 😉

Historical fiction fans are going to enjoy reading Dusk’s Darkest Shores. It looks to be a fantastic series, and this reader is already anxiously awaiting the next installment! I received a complimentary copy of this book. I was not required to write a favorable review. All thoughts and opinions are my own.

Amanda, I was able to pin it on my phone. Which one were you trying to do? Thanks for letting me know!

I can’t get it to work either. On my phone or on laptop. On my phone it says it pins, but when I check in my board it’s not there. On my laptop it says the pin image is broken.

Enjoy reading Regency Romances and love books with a faith thread. I’ve not had the honor of reading one by this author, but would love to. “Dusk’s Darkest Shores” sounds like a fabulous book and can’t wait for the opportunity to read it.

I do not have a favorite Regency book–probably because I don’t have any particular favorites except for my favorite books from childhood. However, Dusk’s Darkest Shores sounds fantastic, especially in light of the faith and disabilities aspects in a historical setting, so it’s on the TBR list.
